Information about GRADALL
The GRADALL brand became well-known globally when the company introduced the excavator with a telescopic jib. The patent for the invention was acquired in 1944, although it is believed that the history of the company started 20 years prior to that.
Brothers Ray and Koop Ferwerda immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, from Holland in 1920 and became construction workers there. After 5 years, they founded their own company specializing in constructing roads, bridges, and utility systems. At that time, the construction industry relied heavily on manual labor, and the company faced a workforce shortage. Moreover, at the end of the 1930s, many US plants started hiring staff to produce armor and ammunition, exacerbating the issue. This prompted the Ferwerda brothers to create a machine that could replace human labor and perform tasks more efficiently. Thus, the first telescopic jib excavator emerged.
Contemporary GRADALL products
Today, GRADALL manufactures three types of excavators with telescopic jibs:
- Caterpillar excavators (used on broken, rocky, and sandy terrains);
- Wheel excavators (known for improved cross-country performance; some are designed for work in mines and tunnels, while others feature rail chassis);
- Freightliner excavators on heavy-duty vehicle chassis (these machines can reach speeds up to 80 km/hr).
The triangular telescopic GRADALL jib is equipped with a unique turning mechanism that allows the jib to rotate around its axis parallel to the ground. This feature enables GRADALL machines to work efficiently in limited space environments. The jib extension and rotation are facilitated by ease-of-movement mechanisms. GRADALL excavators come with a wide range of special rigging tools, including but not limited to:
- Quick-detach adapters;
- Shovels of various configurations;
- Grader blades;
- Hydraulic hammers;
- Mulchers;
- Hydraulic shears;
- Mower-shredders;
- Additional hydraulics;
- Threshing machines;
- Drum clamps;
- Tree crown cutters;
- Dredging equipment.
The jib extension mechanism, also available as additional equipment, enables GRADALL excavators to work efficiently within a radius of 14 meters.
